Top 5 Favorite Fall Activities

Updated: May 2, 2022

Happy fall ya’ll! It’s finally here! The crisp mornings and warm afternoons…my favorite time of year! If you’re looking for some fun activities to do with the family, look no further than our top 5 favorite activities in central Jersey!

Take a Hike! at Cheesequake State Park

Cheesequake State Park is known as one of the best day hikes in New Jersey. Located in Old Bridge, NJ, this 1600 acre park is the perfect place to explore. Because of its location it is situated between 2 ecosystems which adds to its uniqueness. There are saltwater and freshwater marshes, a white cedar swam and plenty of open fields. The park also has 6 easy, marked trails making it a great fit for both beginners and the more advanced. Plan a trip during peak fall foliage for added beauty. According to the Smoky Mountains Fall Foliage Map, most of New Jersey will see the most vibrant oranges and reds between October 12th & October 19th. Some other activities you can enjoy while you are there: fishing, boating, canoeing & crabbing. So pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the day!

Address: Cheesequake State Park 300 Gordon Road Matawan, NJ 07747

Train Ride at Allaire State Park

Calling all train lovers! Climb aboard one of the oldest operating narrow gauge railroad exhibits in the country at Allaire State Park in Farmingdale. Allaire State Park is known for it’s historical 19th-century iron village and steam trains. The ride loops around the park and lasts approximately 15 minutes so while you are there, be sure to check out the tours they offer. Walk through the working bakery, chapel, blacksmith shop and more. Each building features a tour guide dressed to play the part. This park also has several family friendly hiking trails. If you plan on staying for lunch there are plenty of picnic tables throughout, a food truck located near the parking lot, and lots of yummy treats at the village bakery.

Train tickets must be purchased in advance at njmt.org. The train runs Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30-4:00 p.m. and the admission is $5.00 per person.

Apple Picking at Battleview Orchards

One of our favorite places for some good old-fashioned apple picking is Battleview Orchards. Battleview Orchards is a family owned fruit farm located in Freehold, NJ. There is also a sweet little country store on the farm that bakes delicious apple cider donuts fresh daily. Be sure to call ahead to confirm picking information. The country store accepts credit cards, cash only for fresh picked fruit. The do not allow strollers so you may want to plan on wearing your little one. For more information visit their website here.

Corn Maze at Etsch Farms

Corn mazes are such a blast and our favorite one is at Etsch Farm in Monroe Township. Their 8-acre corn maze is a different theme each year and never seems to disappoint. They even have a crossword game hidden throughout the maze for added fun. If you are looking for something with not so much acreage for the littles, they have smaller mazes as well. Tickets are $15 for ages three and up. Your admission fee includes the corn maze, hayride, and train ride. Plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained for hours.
