More people than ever are using postpartum doulas – which is amazing news! The postpartum period is a beautiful and transformative time in a parent's life. It's a period of adjustment, learning, and immense joy. However, it can also be overwhelming and challenging, as new parents navigate sleep deprivation, breastfeeding hurdles, emotional changes, and household responsibilities. The uptick in postpartum doulas means they are getting the support needed in this critical time period.
But when I tell people that I’m a postpartum doula, I’m often surprised by some of the misunderstandings they have about the role. Of course, I love to educate them from there!
Whether you’re considering a postpartum doula or simply want to learn more, here are some of the most common myths and the truth behind them.
Myth 1: Postpartum doulas are just baby holders.
Fact: It’s true that one of the biggest perks of the job is newborn cuddles – but it’s not the bulk of what we do. A postpartum doula is a trained professional who offers comprehensive support to new parents, focusing on the physical, emotional, and practical aspects of the postpartum period. Sometimes this means calming a fussy baby, or holding them while you get some much-needed sleep.
But more often, our team is working with parents and the family to help them adjust and thrive. This includes providing evidence-based information on infant care, assisting with breastfeeding, helping with postpartum recovery, offering emotional support, and facilitating household tasks. Our goal is to make it easier for you to hold your baby without worrying about anything else.
Myth 2: Only mothers who are struggling need postpartum doula support.
Fact: Postpartum doula support is not limited to parents who are experiencing difficulties. In fact, every new family can benefit from the presence of a postpartum doula. Whether you're a first-time parent or welcoming your third child, a doula can provide valuable assistance during the transition period. We offer guidance, reassurance, and practical help, allowing parents to rest, bond with their baby, and gain confidence in their parenting journey. Often, having a postpartum doula nearby can be a tool to prevent struggling in the first place.
Myth 3: Postpartum doulas replace partners or family support.
Fact: Postpartum doulas do not replace partners or family support; just like birth doulas, we compliment it. We love to work collaboratively with the family, offering a non-judgmental and unbiased perspective to make sure that everyone is feeling their best and getting what they need. While often a new mother is the focus of this support, we can also work with partners to ensure that they feel helpful and connected, or even with other children that need special attention.
Our doulas strive to respect the unique dynamics of each family and strive to create a supportive environment that fosters bonding and connection. By sharing our knowledge and expertise, we empower partners and family members to be actively involved in the postpartum experience. This way when our time is over, we’ve left you with everything you need to keep thriving!
Myth 4: Postpartum doulas are a luxury.
Fact: While it's true that hiring a postpartum doula is an investment, it is important to recognize that our support can be tailored to fit various budgets and needs. We ensure that we offer a range of packages and services, making support accessible to a wider range of families. This has allowed us to serve every kind of family in a way that meets their needs without stretching them too thin.
Additionally, some insurance companies may cover part or all of the cost of postpartum doula services. It's worth exploring these options to see if it aligns with your financial situation or what we can do. If needed, we are happy to provide receipts and letters for your insurance company.
While myths may circulate about the role of a postpartum doula, it's important to recognize the truth: postpartum doulas offer comprehensive care that goes beyond holding babies. From emotional support to practical guidance, our knowledge and expertise empower parents, allowing them to navigate the joys and challenges of early parenthood with confidence.
